Based on the true-life case of Armin Meiwes, a German computer programmer, Cannibal tells the tale of a lonely gay man who places a series of online ads in the hopes of attracting someone whom he can cook and eat (!). Amazingly, the ad is successful, attracting the attention of a man (whom is here called only "the Flesh"), and soon, our "hero" and his prospective dinner are frolicking in a blissful state of lovemaking, cuddling, eating, sleeping...doing everything together that a "normal" couple would do...all as a preface to the...ahem...atrocities to come.

RÜCKENWIND (2009)

Two young men, Johann and Robin, take a trip into the countryside. The more they walk the forests of Brandenburg, the stranger their adventure becomes. Bikes disappear, maps prove useless - and each gets to know a new side of the other. Johann and Robin regard the new situation as a kind of sporting challenge. They allow themselves to just go with the flow. After several days of hiking, the two lads arrive at an old farmhouse inhabited by a woman and her adolescent son. The men receive a surprisingly warm welcome and soon begin to share the small family's daily routine and their secrets. For a while they enjoy an enchanted round of excursions and storytelling, flirting and games - until one day the new companions
get too close for comfort. Johann and Robin are flung out of their refuge and back into the world at large. Light Gradient tells the story of a journey of two men, travelling light, searching for the truth beneath the facade, for fairy-tale moments in the heart of the countryside, and for a natural gay relationship far from the madding crowd.

All You Need is Love - Meine Schwiegertochter ist ein Mann (2009)

All You Need Is Love“.

The divorced Catherine Remming lives in an Alpine village in Bavaria. One day she receives from her son Hans, who is in Berlin architecture student, the message that he wants to marry soon Nicki. As Catherine Nicki has never seen and assuming that it is a female name, it also falls from the clouds, as a man who turns out to Nicki. So far, she has dealt with has never been homosexual, and therefore do not know how they should react. Without further ado, they set Nicki and Hans out the door.
Both go into the village inn and watched the next morning by a villager when kissing. Soon the whole village is known that John is gay, and all the prejudices of the villagers appear evident. Even Hans’ father, Christian will not initially accept the homosexuality of his son. Throughout the film he was coming with his ex-wife, Katharina, however, see a closer and that her son has found the love of his life and it does not matter to them that we are dealing with a man.
Catherine takes her village choir colleagues relentlessly their mendacity in mind and Christian must recognize that his second wife Vera has spread a lie: She has claimed that Christian was the biological father of Jack, because they feared that the customer because of the homosexuality of her step-son Avoid their new car dealership could. Enraged, Catherine Vera knocks down and goes to Berlin with Christian, to Hans and his friend Christian’s and their complete solidarity to insure.
Later, the villagers once again let the words of Catherine’s mind, and John and Nicki could get married as planned on the Dorfalm. Treat them all singing their luck and the village choir for both “All You Need Is Love”.

User comment on IMDB:

Americans have said at gay film festivals that this is the first AIDS musical since "Zero Patience." Such comments illustrate the challenge of understanding this complex drama poses to most audiences outside Europe. Away from the continent, few people probably know or care whether Berlin has been the capital of a united Germany for over a decade, or whether there was ever a wall, and so on. It's useless to expect these audiences to understand the issues and nuances in this film, even the upscale, well-educated (by American standards) film festival crowd I saw the film with.

It's great that national cinemas are making films as specific to their cultures as Americans do. Even if this means limiting the box office. US films assume audiences worldwide know American culture (generally true), while US audiences know very little (if anything at all) about other cultures. So, though the opportunity to see a film like ZURUCK... is rare here, it is a banquet for us who are able to understand and savor it.

This drama is best understood by the European & German gay or alternative lifestyle communities, also by intellectual "Ossies," and ideally by former East Berlin gay and HIV/AIDS activists.

Having said that, if you fit the description above; or like two of the film's main character, you are a foreigner immersed in Berlin's recent and present position as Europe's edgiest capital city, this drama is a feast.

The plot crams in many aspects of contemporary unorthodox Eastern Berlin (Prenzlauer Berg) life: East German nostalgia (its 70s & 80s music, attitude, architecture), the local gay/alternative scene, and Berlin's cabaret tradition.

But the film focuses on the deeper issues of living with HIV/AIDS in the present post-antiviral cocktail era, rampant alcoholism among twenty and thirty something young adults, not to mention the fragile and transitory nature of friendships and relationships these days. The latter two are the themes I believe most audiences will identify with.

The ensemble cast is outstanding, and the film has an unusual gritty realism. Unusual but important problems we are living with are addressed and well explored. This is a feature movie you are likely to see only at a gay film festival if you're outside Germany. But if the issues interest you, this film is not a bad way to spend 100 minutes.

Otto; or Up with Dead People (2008)

Otto (Jey Crisfar) is a really cute twink -- who happens to be undead. When not feasting on roadkill or staggering around Berlin, Otto ponders his existence. Soon he finds a purpose with a role in a queer zombie movie directed by a would-be revolutionary lesbian filmmaker. Otto’s fellow cast members are amused by his “method acting,” and a few find him hot -- actually, zombies are fetishized in LaBruce’s queer universe -- but there’s more to this story than meets the jaundiced eye.
Otto made a splash at the Sundance Film Festival (where a few audience members bolted from the theater during an outrageous scene tellingly dubbed the “gut fuck”), and while it contains the Canadian provocateur’s signature themes of explicit sexuality, dark humor and formalistic flourish, it also represents an artistic evolution for him. With an emotional core, superb music (including a melancholy song by Antony & The Johnsons) and many nods to genre influences like George Romero and Carnival of Souls, Otto rises high while remaining proudly, bloodily lowbrow.
